I am teaching primarily in the journalism program at VCU. In recent semesters, I have developed and taught classes on mobile and social media journalism, social media campaigns and leadership, global communication, global health and social media and social media research. My signature teaching projects have been the iPadJournos Mobile Newsroom (please watch the video below) and the IYLEP Social Media Institute.
In 2017, VCU honored me with its Distinguished Teaching Award. In 2015, I received a first-place award in the Best Practices in Teaching Competition of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) for my “Global Health and Social Media” open online course. I also won the Community Engagement Award for Teaching at VCU in 2013, 2014 and 2015. The College of Humanities and Sciences at VCU awarded me its Distinguished Teaching Award in 2016.
